The inside cushion is filled with cotton in a cotton fabric cover. I use this mat for my floor dining set up. The mat is wide enough for perfect coverage when sitting in a cross-legged position. The cotton cushioning is sufficient for me but I am used to sitting on harder surfaces on the floor. I know that the product description gives a thickness of 2.5 inch but once you sit on it, the mat will compress and perhaps one will be an inch from the actual floor. This isn't an issue for me from a comfort point of view but I can see this not being comfortable for some people. The advantage of cotton cushions is that the body stays still which is not the case with say foamed cushion pads or mats that are thicker.

I wanted a dog bed that was not synthetic, and this thing is perfect. I’ve washed the shell a few times, and its held up so far. 6 months of use.
